Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger points are specific areas that can develop in a muscle after an injury, causing chronic pain and stiffness. Muscle spasms caused by injury, along with decreased blood flow can lead to the formation of adhesions in the muscle fibers, leading to trigger points. These spots can cause referred pain, pain in a different location, when pressure is applied.

Treatment uses pressure, typically applied with a small instrument, finger, or thumb. Once applied, the pressure will be held on the tender spot until the painful point dissipates and the muscle is able to relax. Sever points may need more than one session and are often accompanied by other chiropractic adjustments.

Types of Trigger Points

  • Active - points that are actively cause pain
  • Latent - areas that are not currently causing pain, but are causing dysfunction and will cause pain in time
  • Satelite - points that have pain that is cuased by active or latent points
